Bloodline Beats: The Nxumalo Brothers

In the heart of Eswatini’s ever-evolving music landscape, two brothers; Tibuku “Tibza” Nxumalo and his younger sibling, Lunga Nxumalo, have carved out a distinctive sonic identity rooted in love, nostalgia, discipline, and an unbreakable bond.

While both are accomplished professionals in their respective day-to-day fields, their true refuge has always been music.

It is in the rhythms, melodies, and timeless records of their upbringing that the Nxumalo brothers continue to craft some of the most memorable DJ sets in the country and across borders.

Their story is one of heritage, brotherhood, passion, and purpose; a journey guided, as they affectionately say, “by the Zwide Gods.”

A Musical Childhood Written in Vinyl, Tape & Radio Waves

For Tibza, the older of the two, the foundation of his musical journey was laid in childhood. His formative years were shaped by the soulful harmonies of Seventh Day Adventist church music, the silky smoothness of R&B and Soul, and the expressive textures of Acid Jazz, genres his father constantly played at home. The family household was one where music was not just consumed; it was lived.

“As a child, I was immersed in what my father played, especially during the glory days of Radio Metro in the mid-80s,” he recalls.

“I grew up to the likes of Zhané, R. Kelly, Chantay Savage, Aaliyah, Babyface, and many others who shaped my ear for timeless, cool music.”

But it wasn’t just his father who influenced him. His older sibling, then a Law student at UNESWA in the late 90s, exposed him to the emerging sound of House Music—further expanding his musical vocabulary.Tibza’s curiosity had introduced him to Mixmasters, Black Box, Kwaito pioneers like Thebe, and the rising Hip-Hop titans of the time, including Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and 2Pac.

This diverse musical palette would eventually become the backbone of his DJ identity.

A Brotherhood Forged Through Sound

Growing up, Tibza and Lunga shared a home full of sound; a home where music made up “about 75 per cent of family life,” with reading and television taking up the rest. This constant exposure meant the brothers developed not just a love for music, but a shared understanding of its emotional and cultural depth.

“Growing up as siblings remains our superpower,” says Tibza.

“Being five years older allowed me to guide us towards the sounds we loved. Our parents ensured we grew up with an urban, authentic outlook on life. That authenticity is what cements our musicality.”

Lunga remembers his childhood with equal fondness. One of his earliest memories is of Tibza playing music from their father’s car while giving it its weekly polish; a tradition that became both ritual and bonding time.

“That’s where I was introduced to music that was more mature, more tasteful than what kids my age listened to,” he says. “I didn’t realise it then, but those sessions shaped everything I now love and play.”

Crafting the “Nxumalo Sound”

When the two take to the decks, either individually or back-to-back, their sets are a smooth fusion of Soul, R&B, Acid Jazz, Lounge, Broken Beat, Kwaito, House, and other eclectic gems.

Their philosophy is simple: good music is timeless, profound, and intentional.

“I resonate with music made with passion and purpose,” explains Tibza. “Like good fashion or a luxury car, good music must be profound.”

This ideology guides their approach to DJing. Whether playing at exclusive private events, sophisticated lounges, weddings or curated sessions, their sets are crafted with precision, feeling, and a deep consideration of mood and atmosphere.

They are also known for their obsession with time slots; an indicator of their deep respect for pacing, rhythm, and impact.

“We always try to play music for effect, music that enhances the party or event,” says Tibza.

Their back-to-back sets, described as “a thing of dreams,” rely less on rigid planning and more on intuition.

“I always play the first track,” says Tibza.

“From there, the Zwide Gods guide the rest. There’s no pre-planning, just our instincts and the latest potent releases.”

The Year of Musical Milestones

Both brothers have enjoyed a monumental year filled with memorable gigs and career-defining performances.

For Tibza, 2025 has been particularly rich with highlights.

His bi-weekly session, Play For The City at 23:28 Lounge alongside DJ MBO, has become a staple of Mbabane’s night scene for the past two years. He also recalls winter nights playing alongside industry icons Vinny Da Vinci and Picat The Italian—nights that delivered back-to-back sets he describes as nothing short of “GODLY.”

He fondly remembers his 45th birthday lounge celebration, an event he defines as “a jam of note,” and a high-end private wedding at Malandela’s Lawns, where the sophistication of the crowd elevated the entire experience.

“The thrill of playing for well-educated, well-travelled Swazi folks is unmatched,” he shares.

Another standout moment was the melodic back-to-back session with Lunga at But First Coffee at Bahle Gallery; an intimate, soulful performance that the brothers still rave about.

Lunga, meanwhile, has been expanding his footprint in Johannesburg.

This year marked the strengthening of his brand, particularly through his monthly appearances at the renowned Solo Sundaes, an event hosted by Thabo Phalatse and John De Baptist, both respected industry tastemakers.

But the peak of his year came recently when he played at the Ashmed Hour Day Session powered by D’USSÉ at the Leonardo Hotel.

The opportunity to set the ambience at one of the continent’s most luxurious venues remains a defining moment in his journey.

Looking Ahead to the Festive Season

As the festive season approaches, both brothers anticipate a flurry of spontaneous gigs, reunions with familiar faces, and soulful back-to-back sessions that only they can deliver.

For Lunga, being home and playing alongside his brother is the highlight.

“I can’t wait to be back home and jam with Tibza,” he says. “There’s nothing better than doing what we do best together.”

More Than DJs—Curators, Collectors, Brothers

Beyond the lights and turntables, the Nxumalo brothers are passionate music collectors and devoted curators. Their bond is what brings depth to their sets, elegance to their selection, and a shared purpose to their craft.

Their story is not just about DJing, it is about heritage, influence, family, and the generational transmission of sound.

The Nxumalos are, in their words, “one with music.”

A gift from the Zwide Gods. A legacy they proudly carry. A bond they will continue to honour beat after beat, set after set.
