Friends of Kelvin Momo Event is Bringing the Diversity of Amapiano Culture to Eswatini

By Nothando Masilela

This isn’t just another concert—it’s a cultural moment. A night where connection, creativity, and the spirit of Amapiano collide under one roof, bringing back one of the genre’s most influential figures to the heart of Eswatini. Expect a soundscape that lingers long after the music stops.

We caught up with Welile “Wigo” Mthethwa, one of the masterminds behind the event. Reflecting on the roots of Friends of Kelvin Momo, Wigo shared, “Our bond with Kelvin goes way back. We were among the first to bring him to Eswatini for a show we hosted as Blank Group, called Rockabilli. We also helped get him on the lineup for the Luju Festival.” Now, in partnership with Trusoundz Productions, they’re dialing up the energy to bring something truly special.

At the heart of this celebration is Kelvin Momo—a pioneer of the genre often dubbed “private school Amapiano,” a style that’s smooth, soulful, and globally loved. His influence runs deep, inspiring a new wave of young Eswatini DJs and producers who’ve taken to his signature sound like a second language.

Born Thato Ledwaba Kevin, Kelvin Momo’s journey began at just 15, crafting beats that would later evolve into genre-defining hits like Fool Me, Mang Dakiwe, Maye Maye, and Amalobolo. Today, he stands as a symbol of artistic evolution—an icon whose music tells stories that transcend borders.

Bringing an event of this scale to life is more than just a milestone—it’s a statement about the direction Eswatini’s music and entertainment scene is heading. For the organisers, it’s also a conscious effort to uplift and invest in homegrown talent.

Featured performers include a diverse array of local talent such as Aya City, President, Sbu De Drum DJ, DJ Stunner, Qibho Intelektual, Lyrical Busta, Wordsmith Flex, Ash, ItsAllBlaq, and many others.

“This is about giving the spotlight to those who deserve it,” says Wigo. “If you look at the lineup, it’s filled with artists who hold it down every weekend at local venues but don’t always get the call for the big stages.” This time, they’re front and center—right where they belong. Wigo emphasised just how vital these kinds of platforms are. “It’s a new market, a new avenue, another space for talent to grow into. And even though we’re moving forward without sponsorship—something that’s definitely been a challenge—we’re pushing through because we believe in what this means for the future of entertainment in Eswatini.”

The venue setup also promises to be special. “We’re using the vast hotel parking lot space this time around. We’re going to utilise every space, something that’s never been done before,” Wigo said. There will be an outside stage, stalls, and a lifestyle section where people will come, sit, and chat, and enjoy the ambiance, since the event starts during the day at 1 p.m. to 6 a.m. A major highlight to look forward to is the possibility of hearing Kelvin Momo’s new album. “He’s been teasing it, and Eswatini would be very privileged to hear it first,” said Wigo.

Security is also a top priority. They’ve organised separate parking for the event, and maximum security measures will be in place. VIP and VVIP guests, including those with bookings, will have secure access inside. “From the police to security personnel and bouncers, the entire venue, from the rooms to the stage, swimming pool, and bathrooms will be covered,” Wigo assured.

It’s a must-attend event, not just because of Kelvin Momo, but the entire line-up, “Every artist is planning to give their best performance,” said Wigo. “Kelvin has a lot of hits, and De Musical Chef who’s never performed in Eswatini before has worked on massive tracks like John Wick with De Mthuda. Seeing them together on stage, playing one-on-one with songs like Bogogo, is going to be special.”

His final message for Amapiano lovers and Kelvin Momo fans is, “You have the opportunity to experience his upcoming album, all the hits, and Kelvin Momo as a genius in our comfort zone. It’s more like he’s coming for his people that’s why it’s called Friends of Kelvin Momo. We’ve tried to create a very friendly and intimate space for people to experience his genius. The energy around this whole thing is very high, and I’m definitely excited.”
