Sibebe Survivor Challenge Blends Adventure, Purpose and Entertainment

What began more than two decades ago with just 60 adventurous hikers has grown into one of Eswatini’s most celebrated outdoor lifestyle events, drawing a capped 5,000 participants to the foot of Sibebe Rock each year.

But beyond the breathtaking climb and picturesque scenery, the Sibebe Survivor Challenge continues to leave its greatest footprint in communities across the country

President of the Rotary Club of Mbuluzi-Mbabane for the 2026–2027 Rotary year, Buyani Fakudze, said while the annual event offers participants an opportunity to challenge themselves, embrace healthy lifestyles and experience the natural beauty of Sibebe Rock, its true success lies in the lives transformed through the funds it raises.

Fakudze said proceeds from the challenge are channelled towards Rotary’s key areas of focus, including maternal and child health, clean water and sanitation, education, youth development, environmental conservation, disease prevention, and economic and community development.

“From its humble beginnings, the Sibebe Survivor Challenge has evolved into an internationally recognised event that promotes tourism, community spirit and humanitarian work while creating lasting impact in communities,” he said.

This year’s 21st edition once again united hikers from across Eswatini and beyond, with families, corporate teams, fitness enthusiasts and adventure seekers taking on the iconic granite mountain in the spirit of wellness and giving back.

Supporting the event once again was anchor sponsor Nedbank Eswatini, which committed E500,000 towards this year’s challenge. Speaking during the event, Managing Director Fikile Nkosi described the hike as more than a physical challenge, saying every step taken up Sibebe Rock represents hope for vulnerable communities.

“As I stand before you today and look across this sea of people, I am reminded that every great act of kindness begins with a single step,” she said.

Nkosi revealed that last year’s challenge generated approximately E847,000, funding projects that supported healthcare facilities, provided maternity packs for new mothers, rehabilitated schools, installed water tanks in rural communities, assisted vulnerable children and delivered food parcels to elderly people.

She said Nedbank’s support aligns with the bank’s purpose of creating opportunities and building stronger communities, adding that while the institution encourages financial wellness through its Get Money Fit campaign, compassion and generosity remain equally important investments.

“As you go back home today, remember that your registration fee is more than an event ticket. It is education for a child, support for a family, dignity for a mother and hope for a community,” Nkosi said.

After conquering the demanding climb, hikers traded hiking boots for celebration as the event transformed into a vibrant social gathering. Participants relaxed, shared stories from the mountain and enjoyed live entertainment, with award-winning songstress Velemseni delivering an electrifying performance that had the crowd singing along and dancing after a day of endurance.

Blending fitness, tourism, philanthropy and entertainment, the Sibebe Survivor Challenge continues to cement its place as one of Eswatini’s signature lifestyle experiences, where every climb creates memories, and every step changes lives.
