In the real world, developing a clientele and becoming a respected makeup artist takes time and with her ingenuity and passion for the art Bubu White’s journey has been all the more glorifying.
Born at Nazarene in Eswatini, Andile Busisiwe Hlophe of Bubu White Glam has created a resounding reputation for herself both in the Kingdom and neighbouring South Africa. With only a few years in the industry, she has collaborated with a lot of celebrities, like Nadia Nakai, Mihlali Ndamase, Ayanda Ncwane, Pabi Copper, Zee Nxumalo, Langa Mavuso, Lalela Mswane, Uncle waffles, Lamiez Holworthy, and Major league DJs.
Speaking on her early courtship with the art, Bubu expresses that “I fell in love with make-up when I used to apply lip-gloss and mascara in high school, after a friend introduced me to foundation – It absolutely changed my make-up routine. Right after that, I did my research and followed more of our best make-up artists in Eswatini, which made me fall even more in love with make-up and ultimately sealed my love for the art.”
“I don’t have an exciting experience about how I got into make-up and beauty or what first pushed me into it, except the fact I have always been attracted to changing my appearance with make-up and seeing what I can do with it.
“I’ve been in the makeup industry for a good eight years, professionally, and I won’t lie the journey has been a roller coaster but now I’d say I’m at the point where I never imagined I would be in my career and appreciate it as a blessing.”

“To me, makeup is special. It helped me through dark days, it taught me to have fun again and more importantly, it taught me, even when you’ve had a bad day, you can take a look in the mirror, wipe it away and start a fresh again tomorrow. It’s not just a red lipstick, its confidence in a tube. It’s not just a concealer, it’s the secret to giving that teenager the confidence to walk down the street with her head held high when she has a blemish she’s embarrassed of…”
Bubu believes that make-up has the ability to give confidence, to change a life, to evoke a smile or even a tear. She says it empowers women to be confident and stand up and be counted.
Where do you see yourself and the business in the next 5 years?
I see myself putting every dream I’ve had in past five years together. I don’t know where start yet, but I leave everything to the universe and God.
What brands and types of products do you typically use, and what are your favourites?
I use mostly the Nigerian brands, from foundation to concealer powder.- My favourite, currently, would be the Nigerian foundation from Beauty by Ad – it is a beautiful foundation to use, very seamless and has a natural finish all together.

BUBU’S TIPS FOR ASPIRING MAKE-ARTISTS
Have a Pure Vision
Have the pure desire of becoming a makeup artist to prove your skills to yourself, not for the sake of bragging to others about your talents or even wanting fame and fortune for what you do.
Be Humble, Be Nice
Humility and wanting to help or teach other artists is unfortunately not something I’ve come across in our field very often, so be willing to humble yourself with various experiences. Be willing to learn and in turn, be willing to help others.
Embrace Your Unique Style
You’ll develop your style over time and put that in every piece you do. It’s what makes you different and what you want people to remember you by in terms of your style.
Aim For Referrals and Repeat Customers
There are two big things clients will ultimately remember you by if they want to hire you again, or recommend you to a friend:
Your professionalism – this means the quality of your work, your knowledge of products, you sanitation practices, being on time etc.
Your personality and attitude – does it come across that you’re passionate about what you do, being a good listener, and easy to work with (that counts for clients, photographers, hair stylists and everyone on set!)
It’s About More Than Applying Products
While it may sound cliche, something that I’ve really grasped with experience is that being a good makeup artist isn’t just a job, it’s also being a healer by beautifying, communicating and ultimately making your clients feel positive about themselves inside and out.
