Growing up surrounded by music, 22 year old DJ Ash, real name Simphiwe Karen Ashley Dlamini her musical journey began by watching her uncle and brothers spin records igniting a curiosity that would soon grow into her own flourishing career, channelling her path into the vibrant world of Afro House and Melodic Tech sounds.
โI started by simply watching and then I gradually started joining them by the decks, learning the basics,โ Ash recalls. Today, sheโs recognized for her unique sound and the energy she brings to the turntables.
When it comes to musical influences, DJ Ash draws from some of the most remarkable talents from the Afro House genre. She cites the creative works of Fka Mash, Darque, Naarly, and Shimza as sources of inspiration, which has guided her evolution in the genre. For DJ Ash, the greatest joy in her work comes from helping others find happiness and healing through music.
โSeeing people dance, letting loose, and being their happiest selves while Iโm on the decksโitโs a beautiful feeling,โ she shares. And the fact that she can make a living out of something she loves only deepens her passion.

DJ Ash recognizes and champions the shifting landscape for women in the music industry. She mentions influential artists like Uncle Waffles, DJ Zinhle, and DBN Gogo, who are breaking barriers and leading in spaces once dominated by men. “These artists show us that women can be powerful leaders and innovators, not limited to local scenes but making their mark on the global stage.”
DJ Ash’s gigs arenโt confined to her home country; she’s already ventured across the border to perform in South Africa. One of her standout moments came from playing at the Amiri Store in Sandton, a unique experience that differed from the typical club setting. โIt opened my eyes to the business side of music and showed me how fluid music can beโitโs not confined to just one space.โ

DJ Ash is not a stranger to the challenges that come with being a female DJ in a predominantly male industry. She speaks candidly about facing gender bias and stereotypes from assumptions about her technical skills to societal pressures on her appearance. โSome people assume I rely more on looks than talent, or that I need to fit a certain image but I focus on my skill and authenticity; thatโs what matters most.โ.
Looking ahead, DJ Ash has her sights set on creating her own music and establishing meaningful connections in the industry. โIt would be an honour to play at Kunye and work my way up to bigger stages globally,โ she says. From her early days exploring electro beats to her journey as an Afro House DJ, DJ Ash embodies passion, resilience, and authenticity.
