A Night for the Culture: Headcount Pays Tribute to J Dilla

The recently revamped Eswatini Theatre Club is set to host a powerful homecoming as the pioneering hip hop movement Headcount returns to its original roots for a special tribute edition this February. This coming Friday, 20th February 2026, the iconic cultural space will come alive as Headcount celebrates the life and enduring influence of legendary producer and MC J Dilla, honouring his immeasurable contribution to hip hop culture worldwide.

A Movement Returns Home

Headcount is widely regarded as Eswatiniโ€™s pioneering hip hop platform. Born at Theatre Club, the movement provided a formative stage for many of the countryโ€™s most beloved MCs, poets and musicians. In its heyday, the daytime vibe event drew throngs of youth from across the country, nurturing creative expression and building a vibrant hip hop community.

Its return to Theatre Club during โ€œDilla Monthโ€ is both symbolic and fitting, a full-circle moment for a movement that helped shape the Kingdomโ€™s alternative cultural landscape.

Beyond the music, the event promises an immersive cultural experience, with curated stalls and pop-up activities. In a nod to Dillaโ€™s final studio album, Donuts, themed donuts will be available, a sweet tribute to one of hip hopโ€™s most revered bodies of work.

The Soundtrack of the Night

Headlining the evening is DJ Czar, a versatile DJ, producer, promoter, and respected practitioner within Eswatiniโ€™s hip hop and broader cultural scenes. Under the banner โ€œCzar & Friends,โ€ he will lead a carefully crafted musical journey inspired by Dillaโ€™s timeless sound and the broader spectrum of hip hop and neo-soul.

The line-up will also feature dynamic acts including the enigmatic Fela Kuru, the genre-bending Sabeloog, and other notable collaborators, promising an evening of beautifully curated sets and authentic cultural expression.

Patrons can expect hip hop. Expect neo-soul. And most of all, expect intentional, masterfully woven soundscapes that pay homage to one of the genreโ€™s greatest architects.
