Akuse Khula Brings African Jazz Home for an Intimate Eswatini Showcase

The sounds of African jazz will take centre stage at the Eswatini Theatre Club this Friday, August 14, as Makotopong Sound Studios (MSS), in partnership with Lokuhle Media Group, presents “An Evening With: Akuse Khula”, an intimate showcase celebrating music, heritage and the evolving creative industry.

Commencing from 6PM to10PM, the event will bring together music lovers, creatives, industry professionals and arts supporters for an evening centred on the musical journey of Akuse Khula, a vocalist, pianist and composer whose work blends formal jazz training with the storytelling traditions of siSwati culture.

Born in Eswatini and now based in Pretoria, Khula’s artistic identity is deeply rooted in the region. His father was born in Barberton, later went into exile in Eswatini and eventually settled in Swalala, the community Khula proudly calls home.

That heritage forms an important thread through his debut album, Phuphani, meaning “Dream”. The 13-track project, produced by Victor Sibusiso Masondo, explores themes of identity, dignity and the courage to dream in one’s own language.

A graduate of the Tshwane University of Technology, Khula has developed his career across performance, composition and mentorship. His contribution to contemporary Swati music extends beyond his own catalogue, having played an instrumental role in shaping and mentoring artists including Bholoja and Sands.

For audiences attending Friday’s showcase, the evening offers an opportunity to experience Khula’s music in a more intimate setting while gaining a deeper appreciation of the personal and cultural influences behind his sound. The event is also being positioned as a statement about the potential of Eswatini’s creative economy.

Makotopong Sound Studios, which counts artists including Bholoja, Mimi and McCoy Mrubata among its creative associations, has built its platform around recording, music production, artist development and collaboration. Its partnership with Lokuhle Media Group brings together music production, live entertainment, marketing and media in a single creative experience.

“We are excited to host Akuse Khula and the artists in Eswatini and to create an environment where they can connect meaningfully with audiences, creatives and industry stakeholders,” said Lokuhle Media Group.

“For us, this is not simply about hosting a show. It is about creating platforms that allow artists to be experienced, supported and connected to the wider creative economy.” The hosting stable added that professional hosting and event production form part of a broader effort to create sustainable opportunities within the entertainment sector.

“There is immense talent and potential within the region, and we believe that collaboration is essential to building a stronger creative industry,” Lokuhle Media Group said. “By bringing artists together with local creatives, audiences and businesses, we can create opportunities that extend beyond a single performance.”

With tickets priced at E250, An Evening With: Akuse Khula promises a sophisticated night of live music while providing a platform for cultural exchange and creative collaboration.
