Blackdegree Takes Eswatini Fashion to Fancy Africa

Eswatini fashion is heading to Mozambique, with Manzini-based streetwear brand Blackdegree set to represent the Kingdom at Fancy Africa during the 10th-anniversary edition of the platform.

Led by co-founder and head designer Kwenzie Zwane, Blackdegree will be part of the partnership programme between LUJU Festival and Fancy Africa, which brings African creatives together through fashion, culture and collaboration.

The programme will take place in Maputo from September 28 to October 3, giving the Eswatini brand an opportunity to present its work to an audience beyond the Kingdom.

For Blackdegree, the appearance is another step in a journey that has increasingly taken its designs into regional fashion spaces.

The brand has built its identity around contemporary streetwear with African influences, using bold prints, distinctive textiles and statement pieces to create clothing that sits between street culture and more elevated fashion.

Its work has also incorporated cultural references and storytelling, with Zwane previously encouraging African designers to use fashion as a way of documenting their own histories and lived experiences.

Blackdegree first gained attention through local fashion platforms before expanding its presence through events such as Eswatini Spring Fashion Week and the Luju Fashion Runway.

The brand made its Luju debut in 2025, where Zwane described the opportunity as an important step for the label. Its collection featured the bold, distinctive prints that have become part of Blackdegree’s visual identity.

The relationship with Luju continued into 2026, when Blackdegree was selected among the local designers for the festival’s fashion programme.

Zwane described returning to the platform as a meaningful experience, particularly because of the opportunity to express African identity through fashion.

That journey has also opened doors beyond Eswatini.Blackdegree became part of Africarise, a South African African-fashion retail platform founded by designer Thula Sindi.

According to Zwane, the relationship began taking shape during the previous Luju Festival, where Sindi was the headline designer and Blackdegree showcased alongside other local designers.

The relationship later developed into a retail opportunity, giving Blackdegree a presence within the South African market. In 2026, the brand remained part of the Africarise stable as the platform relocated its Johannesburg store from Sandton to Melrose Arch.

The store features a selection of established and emerging African fashion brands, placing Blackdegree alongside designers from across the continent.

For a brand that has positioned itself around African creativity, the move into regional retail is significant because it allows Blackdegree’s work to reach customers outside Eswatini while maintaining its local identity.

Zwane has also spoken about the importance of moving African fashion beyond simply reproducing international ideas.

In a recent discussion on the local fashion industry, he argued that designers should use their clothing to tell stories rooted in African experiences rather than relying on European narratives.

He described fashion as a form of documentation, where collections can preserve histories, identities and lived experiences.

That approach is reflected in Blackdegree’s design language, which combines contemporary streetwear with African references rather than treating culture as separate from modern fashion. The Fancy Africa appearance now adds another regional platform to that journey.

The collaboration with LUJU and Fancy Africa is intended to strengthen creative exchange between Eswatini and Mozambique while creating opportunities for designers to enter new markets.

For Blackdegree, it also places an Eswatini streetwear label within a wider African fashion conversation. The timing comes as the brand continues to develop its presence beyond the local market.

From its earlier showcases in Eswatini to the Luju runway and Africarise retail platform in South Africa, Blackdegree’s journey has gradually moved from local visibility towards regional exposure.

Its appearance in Maputo will therefore be another opportunity for Zwane and his team to present the brand on a larger African stage.

For Eswatini’s fashion industry, the participation also reflects the growing number of local designers finding ways to take their work beyond the Kingdom while maintaining a distinctly local point of view.

At Fancy Africa, Blackdegree will bring that perspective to Mozambique through the same bold, contemporary language that has shaped the brand in Eswatini.

The Maputo showcase runs from September 28 to October 3, with Blackdegree representing Eswatini as part of the LUJU and Fancy Africa partnership programme.

For Zwane, it is another runway  but also another opportunity to show what Eswatini fashion can look like when it is given space to travel.
