EXECUTIVE AT HOME: Nqoba Manana – Standard Bank’s Head Of Product On Balance, Purpose And The Power Of Passion

In an era where the lines between professional and personal life often blur, Nqoba Manana, Head of Product at Standard Bank, exemplifies the modern executive who has mastered not just leadership at work, but harmony at home.

Guided by discipline, fueled by curiosity, and grounded in love for family, his journey reminds us that true success thrives alongside self-care, creativity, and genuine connection.

“I don’t believe in work-life balance but work-life integration…” says Manana.

“Picture me as a tightrope walker with noise-cancelling headphones. I focus on one step, block out the circus, and remind myself that applause at home counts double a standing ovation at work.”

This philosophy reflects his grounded approach to leadership. For him, productivity isn’t about long hours, it’s about boundaries, priorities, and being intentional. As a husband and professional, Manana admits that juggling both roles is an ongoing dance of effort and empathy.

“I upgraded my marriage vows to include, ‘I promise to shut my laptop when you enter the room unless it’s on fire,’” he says with a laugh.

“My wife and I have nightly status meetings for emotional check-ins, planning, and high-fives for the day’s wins. It’s how we stay aligned and connected.”

Beyond his boardroom achievements, Manana is a self-proclaimed “serial hobby-hopper.” When he’s not driving product innovation or strategizing transformation agendas at Standard Bank, he’s likely boxing, hiking, or losing himself in a good book.

“I read, I hit the gym, and sometimes I disappear into the mountains to hike,” he shares. “This rotating menu of activities keeps me curious and recharges my creativity.”

However, even for high achievers like Manana, burnout is a familiar challenge. Reflecting on his MBA days, he admits, “There was a time when my brain started buffering like bad Wi-Fi. My career coach taught me to run a 15-minute ‘energy audit.’ I’d score my sleep, exercise, focus, and mood on a one-to-five scale. If two metrics dropped below three, I’d intervene.”

He also swears by what he calls the “small victories” method. “Start the week by tackling a task that matters and can be finished before lunch. It revives your sense of momentum,” he says.

So what fuels this drive and determination? “My wife,” he answers simply. “And the thought that somewhere, a younger version of me dreamed of being in this exact position. I owe that guy a good show.”

Looking ahead, Manana envisions a future of purpose, innovation, and impact. “Five years from now, I see myself still waking up grateful for my greatest title ‘husband’. Professionally, I’ll be leading transformation agendas that merge strategy with empathy, helping businesses navigate a changing financial landscape,” he says.

He also sees himself empowering young entrepreneurs and uplifting livelihoods through community initiatives and agile consultancy work.

BEYOND SUITS, BOARDROOM

Beyond the suits and spreadsheets, Manana has a lighter side. He describes himself as a “braai master,” with his go-to meal being barbeque steak, sweet potato wedges, and a tangy slaw. When dining out, he recommends Ukko Restaurant “Thank me later,” he quips.

His favourite music? “Hip Hop is the only right answer,” he declares, though he admits to dabbling in neo-soul with artists like Masego and Alex Isley. As for sports, he’s a die-hard Orlando Pirates fan and cheers for Real Madrid and the Chicago Bulls internationally.

On quieter days, you’ll find him re-reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell or rewatching Game of Thrones at least up to Season 6.

His weekends often begin with a sunrise hike with his wife and their dog, a ritual he says “grounds him in gratitude.”

And if there’s one place that holds his heart, it’s Bali. “I went there in 2019 and fell in love with the beaches, the food, and the culture. It’s a place where time slows, ideas flow, and every sunset feels like a private show.”

With his blend of strategic brilliance, humility, and heart, Nqoba Manana represents a new kind of executive, one who leads not just with his mind, but with his soul.
