Penny Bouwer Appointed to Prestigious Basadi in Music Awards Advisory Board

Eswatini creative entrepreneur and social impact strategist Penny Bouwer has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the renowned Basadi in Music Awards, a continental platform dedicated to celebrating and advancing women in Africa’s music and creative industries.

The appointment places Bouwer among an influential group of women leaders, industry experts and creatives tasked with guiding the strategic direction of one of Africa’s most respected women-focused music awards programmes.

Bouwer, who has built a reputation as a champion of creative development and youth empowerment in Eswatini, described the appointment as both an honour and a responsibility.

“I am incredibly excited and honoured to join the Basadi in Music Awards Advisory Board and also in awe of the phenomenal women who have contributed towards shaping the African creative industry, with whom I sit,” she said.

Her appointment is a significant achievement not only for her career but also for Eswatini’s growing creative sector, which continues to gain recognition beyond the country’s borders.

According to information released by the Basadi in Music Awards, Bouwer has established an impressive career spanning artist management, digital marketing and creative development. Her work has focused on creating opportunities for emerging talent and strengthening Africa’s creative ecosystem.

She previously pioneered the MTN Bushfire Firefly youth talent initiative, a programme that helped identify and nurture young artistic talent. She later played a key role in managing the festival’s annual Arts Round Table, a platform designed to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among creatives and industry stakeholders.

Bouwer also served as Project Manager for the upcoming Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival, one of Eswatini’s premier cultural events. Through these roles, she has contributed to the development of platforms that promote creativity, entrepreneurship and cultural exchange.

As a representative of Eswatini on the advisory board, Bouwer said she is proud to contribute to a platform that champions women’s leadership and excellence across the continent. “As a creative entrepreneur from Eswatini, I am especially proud to contribute to a platform that champions women’s voices, leadership and excellence across the continent,” she said.

She emphasised the need for inclusive spaces where women can thrive and receive recognition for their contributions to the industry. “Creating inclusive spaces where talent can grow, innovation can thrive, and women are acknowledged for their contributions remains essential to the future of our industry,” she added.

The Basadi in Music Awards was established to address gender disparities in the music and entertainment sector by recognising women’s achievements while creating opportunities for growth, mentorship and leadership.

As an Advisory Board member, Bouwer will help shape initiatives aimed at empowering women in the creative industries and strengthening the awards’ impact across Africa.

She expressed gratitude to the organisation’s leadership for the opportunity, thanking Founder and Chief Executive Officer Hloni Modise and the Basadi in Music Awards team for their confidence in her abilities.

Her appointment is expected to further elevate Eswatini’s presence within the continental creative economy while providing a platform for local talent and industry perspectives to be represented at a higher level. For many within the Kingdom’s arts sector, Bouwer’s achievement serves as a reminder that Emaswati creatives continue to make meaningful contributions to Africa’s cultural and creative landscape.
