Yini Loku is a collaborative project space and an award-winning creative space that has been helping creatives make their mark in the arts industry. Siphilile Magagula, affectionately known as Sips, is a passionate entrepreneur and cultural practitioner who is a co-founder at Yini Loku, a transformative art gallery and creative space in Eswatini. As the lead coordinator at Yini Loku and a key figure at the Antidote Culture Foundation, Sips is committed to fostering a vibrant artistic community in Eswatini despite the fact that the creative industry often faces significant challenges.
Yini Loku emerged as a collaborative effort among a group of creatives who were able to navigate the complexities of building sustainable careers in the arts in Eswatini. Recognizing the gaps in resources and overall support for artists, this collective sought to create a space where creativity could flourish. Supported by partners such as Yebo Art Gallery, Yebo Art Reach, and Antidote Music as well as funding from the Commonwealth, Yini Loku opened its doors in December 2023.

Since its inception, Yini Loku has quickly evolved into a multifunctional space, accommodating a variety of artistic endeavors. From an art gallery to a co-working space, performance venue, and even a karaoke spot, the gallery has transformed into a โregenerative third space.โ Sips highlights that the feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with artists appreciating the venue that authentically reflects their needs and aspirations. Notably, Yini Loku was recently recognized with a Consumerโs Choice Award and has been approached to open another gallery in Manzini.

Yini Loku offers a range of resources designed to support local artists. The space operates as a co-working area from Wednesday to Friday, providing free Wi-Fi and a collaborative environment where creatives from diverse disciplines can connect. With affordable rental options starting as low as E100 per hour, the venue is accessible to artists looking to host their events or workshops.
Beyond providing an arts space, Yini Loku actively engages with the creative community through various programs. Initiatives such as the Vukubone Sound Lab Accelerator Program equip artists in music and podcasting with essential skills and mentorship. Additionally, workshops on mental health, author events, and weekly drawing sessions further enhance the artistic landscape. Upcoming mixer events aim to strengthen networks while also building capacity among participants.

Sipโs shares valuable advice for budding artists navigating the challenges of the creative industry in Eswatini. She emphasizes the importance of dedication, continuous learning, and collaboration. โBe a sponge,โ she advises, encouraging artists to absorb knowledge from various fields and to build a supportive community. โItโs harder alone,โ she notes, underscoring the strength found in collaboration.
Looking ahead, Yini Loku has ambitious plans. In the short term, the team aims to expand operating hours to open the space throughout the week. In the long term, they envision a thriving creative hub that provides comprehensive resources for Swati creatives, from access to equipment to networking opportunities. The ultimate goal is to create an ecosystem where artists can collaborate meaningfully and realize their full potential.
Sips mentioned that draws inspiration from the resilience and creativity of emerging artists in Eswatini. โTheir relentless pursuit of artistic expression despite the challenges they face, fuels our commitment to keeping the spirit of creativity alive. The quality of their work is awe-inspiring,โ she reflected, emphasizing on the importance of fostering an environment where artists can thrive.

In a country where the creative landscape is evolving, Yini Loku stands as a beacon of hope and innovation, paving the way for a more vibrant and connected artistic community in Eswatini. Through collaboration, support, and a shared vision, Sips and her team are not only transforming the local arts scene but also inspiring future generations of creatives.
