Film lovers in Eswatini are in for a cinematic treat as the European Union Film Festival 2026 arrives at the Eswatini Theatre Club in Mbabane from 13–16 May. The four-day event, which is free to the public, promises a vibrant celebration of storytelling, culture, and international cinema, featuring films from across Europe and beyond.
Organised in partnership with the European Union and Alliance Française Mbabane, the festival also marks 40 years of Alliance Française in Eswatini and celebrates 50 years of partnership between the European Union and Eswatini. The event brings together embassies, cultural institutions, filmmakers, and audiences for an immersive cultural experience centered around the power of film.

The festival lineup includes a diverse selection of acclaimed productions such as After Us, The Flood, Pause, The Dance Club, Vermiglio, Mr Nobody Against Putin, Khumbini, and The Village Next to Paradise. Audiences can expect a mix of drama, documentary, comedy, and socially driven storytelling that reflects different perspectives, languages, and cultures from around the world.
Beyond the screenings, the atmosphere at the Eswatini Theatre Club is expected to be lively and engaging, creating a social space where cinema enthusiasts can discuss storylines, performances, and themes long after the credits roll. Local businesses are also joining in to enhance the festival experience. Cork & Co announced that they will be present throughout the event to keep attendees “well-hydrated,” offering wine to complement the sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere of the festival.
Festival organisers say the event is not only about entertainment, but also about cultural exchange and community engagement. By showcasing films from different countries and backgrounds, the European Union Film Festival aims to encourage dialogue, creativity, and appreciation for global cinema within Eswatini’s growing arts scene.
The festival has already generated excitement online, with many residents eager to attend a free cultural event of this scale in Mbabane. Support from several international embassies and cultural organisations further highlights the significance of the initiative and its role in strengthening artistic collaboration in the region.

With free entry, a strong international film lineup, and a vibrant social atmosphere, the European Union Film Festival 2026 is shaping up to be one of Mbabane’s standout cultural events this May. Film fans, students, creatives, and curious newcomers alike are encouraged to attend and experience four days of cinema, conversation, and culture in the heart of Eswatini.
