In a vibrant display of community spirit and commitment to healthy living, Matsapha Municipality has launched a refreshing wellness initiative that is fast becoming a highlight on the town’s weekly calendar. Dubbed “Matsapha Aerobics – Feel the Energy”, the free aerobics sessions take place every Wednesday from 14:30 to 16:30 at the Matsapha Town Council Nursery, inviting residents of all ages to come together, move their bodies and prioritise their wellbeing.
The programme, open to the entire Matsapha community at no cost, blends fun, fitness and fellowship in an outdoor setting that encourages both physical activity and social connection. Under the guidance of energetic instructors, participants engage in lively routines designed to boost stamina, strengthen muscles and improve overall cardiovascular health.
Public Relations Officer for Matsapha Municipality, Nozipho Kunene, says the initiative reflects the municipality’s broader vision of building a healthier, more connected community.

“This programme is about more than exercise,” Kunene explains. “It is about creating a safe and welcoming space where residents can come together, release stress, improve their health and strengthen community bonds. We want wellness to be accessible to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level.”
The benefits of regular aerobics are well documented. Physically, participants enjoy improved heart health, increased flexibility, better coordination and enhanced energy levels. Regular movement also supports weight management and reduces the risk of lifestyle-related illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes, conditions that continue to affect many communities across the country.
Beyond the physical, the mental and emotional gains are just as significant. Group exercise has been shown to reduce stress, ease anxiety and lift mood through the release of endorphins, often referred to as “feel-good hormones.” For many attendees, the Wednesday sessions offer a welcome break from daily pressures and a chance to reset mentally in a positive, supportive environment.
Socially, Matsapha Aerobics is strengthening community ties. Residents who might otherwise never meet now share laughter, encouragement and a common goal of healthy living. This sense of belonging plays a crucial role in fostering community pride and mutual support.
Kunene adds that the municipality hopes the initiative will inspire long-term lifestyle changes. “Our goal is to cultivate a culture of wellness in Matsapha. When people see that staying active can be enjoyable and social, they are more likely to make it part of their routine,” she says.
With its combination of accessibility, fun and tangible health benefits, Matsapha Aerobics stands as a shining example of how local government can champion preventative healthcare and community wellbeing. As the music plays and feet move in unison each Wednesday afternoon, Matsapha is not only exercising, it is building a healthier, happier future together.
