Phakama Set to Join Eswatini’s Regional Entertainment Calendar

A growing appetite among Eswatini audiences for regional entertainment experiences could position the Phakama Mpumalanga Festival as a fixture on the Kingdom’s cross-border entertainment calendar.

The lifestyle, music and cultural festival returns for its fourth edition from October 31 to November 1 at the Home of Phakama at Ngwenya Estate in White River, Mpumalanga, with organisers promising one of its biggest editions yet.

For Eswatini, the festival presents an attractive regional entertainment option, particularly given the close geographical and cultural links between the Kingdom and Mpumalanga.

Phakama’s evolution beyond a conventional music festival could further strengthen its appeal to Swazi audiences. The event combines live music with fashion, art, camping and curated outdoor lifestyle experiences, creating a weekend destination rather than a single concert experience.

This positioning comes at a time when Eswatini audiences are increasingly travelling across the region for major entertainment and lifestyle events, while South African festivals continue to attract visitors from neighbouring countries.

Phakama could therefore carve out a space on the annual entertainment calendar for Eswatini music lovers looking for experiences beyond the Kingdom’s borders.

The 2026 line-up already includes Ami Faku, Sminofu, Ntomusica, Wonderboom and Canicee, offering a blend of established and emerging acts.

Wonderboom’s inclusion is particularly relevant to Eswatini audiences following the South African rock band’s recent performance at the Standard Bank Luju Festival, creating another connection between the two festival markets.

Phakama Festival PRO Promise Ngwenya said the festival’s ambitions extend beyond its home market, with regional audiences forming an important part of its growth.

“We want Phakama to become an experience that people travel for. Eswatini is an important neighbouring market, and we see a real opportunity to build stronger connections with audiences, artists, brands and creatives across the border.”

The potential growth of Phakama among Eswatini audiences could also create wider economic opportunities.

Visitors travelling from the Kingdom would contribute to accommodation, transport, food, retail and other tourism-related businesses in Mpumalanga, while Eswatini artists, vendors and brands could potentially find opportunities to participate in the growing festival ecosystem.

The festival’s partnership with Rise FM also gives it an established media platform through which to extend its reach across the region.

For Eswatini’s entertainment industry, the relationship could work both ways. While Swazi audiences gain another regional destination, local artists and creative entrepreneurs gain opportunities to connect with a larger Southern African entertainment market.

As Phakama enters its fourth edition, its challenge and opportunity will be to convert its growing profile into a sustainable regional following.

If successful, the festival could become more than a Mpumalanga event. It could establish itself as a cross-border lifestyle destination, with Eswatini audiences forming an important part of its annual community.
